More Guns Result in More Gun Suicides

States with higher gun ownership have more gun suicides. The average gun suicide rate for all states is 6.9 per 100,000 people per year. This is 10 times higher the gun suicide rate of 28 other high-income countries of 0.7. US states with high rates of gun ownership, called "High Gun States" in this study, have a gun suicide rate of 10.3 gun suicides per 100,000 people, or 50% higher than the US average. States with low levels of gun ownership, "Low Gun States" have 2 gun suicides per 100,000 people. High Gun States have five times the gun suicide rate of Low Gun States.

More Guns Result in More Homicides

US states with higher gun ownership have more gun homicides. The average gun homicide rate for all states is 4.1 per 100,000 people per year. This dwarfs the gun homicide rate of 28 other high-income countries of 0.16. US states with higher rates of gun ownership, called "High Gun States" in this study, have a gun homicide rate of 6 gun homicides per 100,000 people, or 50% higher than the US average. States with low levels of gun ownership, called "Low Gun States" have 2.2 gun homicides per 100,000 people. High Gun States have a 2.7 times higher gun homicide rate than Low Gun States.

High Gun Ownership Results in High Gun Violence

The ten US states with the highest rate of gun deaths have a gun ownership average of 47%. In other words, in the ten states with the highest level of guns violence, 47% of their residents own a gun. Conversely, in the ten states with the lowest level of gun violence, 22% of their residents own a gun. A gun ownership level that is 2.2 times higher in high gun ownership states (47% vs 22%) has resulted in gun deaths that are 3.3 time higher in those states (19.4 vs 5.8 gun death rate per 100,000 people per year). More guns = more gun violence.

Every year, over 80,000 Americans are killed or injured by gun violence. The majority, about 45.000 per year are killed. Another 40,000 are injured. 2021 was the most violent year in US history. The carnage includes thousands of youths under the age of 18 that are killed or injured from gun violence. Many are under the age of 11.
