Most Gun Deaths

The US has by far the most gun deaths compared to 28 other comparable high-income countries. While the combined population of these 28 other high-income countries is more that twice as large as the US population, the US has 5 times more gun deaths than all 28 other comparable countries combined. The US has a Gun Death Rate of 11 gun deaths per 100,000 people per year. The other 28 high-income countries have a combined Gun Death Rate of 1 gun death per 100,000 people. US residents are 11 times more likely to die from gun violence than 28 other comparable high-income countries combined.

Highest Gun Homicide Rate

The US has 11 times as many gun homicides as 28 other comparable high-income countries combined, in spite of have less than half the combined population of these 28 countries. In 2015, 13,120 people were killed by guns in the US, compared to 1,180 for all other 28 countries combined. The US Gun Homicide rate is 25 times higher than the 28 other comparable high-income countries combined. The US has a Gun Homicide Rate of 4.1 homicides by guns per year for every 100,000 people. 28 other high-income countries have a combined Gun Homicide Rate of 0.16 gun homicides per 100,000 people per year.

Highest Gun Violence Against Women

Gun violence against women in the US is extremely high compared to other countries. In spite of having less than half the population of 28 other high-income countries, the US had 11 times the number of female gun deaths in 2015. In that year, 5,201 women died of gun violence, equal to 14 per day. The US has 25 times the female gun death rate of 3.2 per 100,000 persons, and 21 times the female gun homicide rate of 1.2 per 100,000 persons compared to 28 other high-income countries. Women are 25 times more likely to die from a gun, and 21 times more likely to be murdered by a gun in the US.

Most Child Gun Deaths

The US has an order of magnitude more child gun deaths than 28 other comparable high-income countries combined. In 2015, the US had 443 gun deaths of children aged 14 and younger. This was 13 times higher than 28 other comparable countries combined, which had a total of 34 child gun deaths in spite of having over twice the population of the US. The US has by far the highest gun death rate of children compared to other comparable countries. Children in the US are 24 times more likely to die from guns than the children of 28 other comparable countries combined.

High Non-White Homicide Rate

The US homicide rate for non-whites is very high by any comparison. In the US, the gun homicide rate for non-whites of 11.5 per 100,000 Americans means one of every 8,700 non-whites was murdered with a gun in the year of 2015. Non-white Americans are six times more likely to be murdered by a gun than white Americans. Non-white Americans are 72 times more likely to be murdered with a gun compared to all residents (white and non-white) of 28 other high-income countries. White Americans are 12 times more likely to be murdered with a gun than all races from 28 other comparable counties.

Highest Gun Suicides

It is a sad reality is more Americans take their own lives with a gun than are killed by someone else with a gun. Access to a gun triples the risk of gun death by suicide. In 2015, 22,080 Americans died by gun suicide, four times that of 28 other high-income countries combined. The suicide by gun death rate is 10 times higher in the US than comparable countries. 60 Americans die by gun suicide every day, compared to 14 per day in 28 other comparable countries combined, which have more than twice the population of the US.

Every year, over 80,000 Americans are killed or injured by gun violence. The majority, about 45.000 per year are killed. Another 40,000 are injured. 2021 was the most violent year in US history. The carnage includes thousands of youths under the age of 18 that are killed or injured from gun violence. Many are under the age of 11.
